I am having trouble starting my ATV, or motorcycle
Starting Trouble: Start with the basics
- Make sure the battery is connected and fully charged
- Make sure the ignition fuse located under the seat in most cases is not blown.
- The red kill switch button on the handle bars is in the on position. The on position will be with the circle symbol pressed in. Some ATV's have a rocker type switch, you have to press it in to re-set the kill switch.
- Make sure the tether or safety lanyard, is plugged in and making contact. Make sure it is pressed all the way in
- Make sure you have the brake applied. make sure the brake light is coming on when applying pressure to both brakes.
- Make sure the alarm (if equipped), is dis-armed. Use the un-lock symbol to reset the alarm
If you have checked all of these items, bring your ATV in for further diagnostics. Call 918-286-3696 for a appointment.
What Fuel Should I run in my unit.
Fuel: Do not use Ethanol or E85 fuel in any power sports unit.
Here at Outdoors 'N More we STRONGLY recommend you stay away from any E85 or other Ethanol based fuels. These fuels can cause lots of headaches in ATV's, Motorcycles, Watercraft any other 'intermittently' used items. Ethanol fuel tends to separate quickly and will leave these very sensitive carburetors on these units at best very dirty, sometimes damaged and we have even seen ruined carburetors from Ethanol based fuels.
These machines in most cases, do not need 'premium' fuel, but most fuel stations do not use Ethanol in there premium fuel. So try to run premium at all times unless you know there is no Ethanol in the fuel. It will save you a lot of time, headaches and repair cost!!!
What oil should I run in my unit.
Oil: What type of oil should I use.
Manual Shift: If your motorcycle or ATV, uses a clutch you need to run a oil that is designed for a wet clutch application. Here at Outdoors 'N More we use Castrol 4T motorcycle oil.
Automatic Single Speed: The small kids dirt bikes and ATV's use a dry clutch system, it is fine to use a 5w30 in the fall and up to a 10w30 in the summer. Do not use a HD30 designed for a lawn mower, this oil is much too thick and will wreak havoc on the starter. Brand is not that big of a deal use a quality oil. These engines ARE NOT designed for synthetic oil, it is VERY common to see oil leaks in machines not designed for synthetic oil. Just us a conventional oil, change it regularly and you will be fine.
How to clean my air filter
Servicing the air filter: This is very important
This is a VERY important item to the longevity of your powesports unit. And this is one of the most overlooked items that we have seen. Servicing the air filter on most machines is a very easy fast way to protect your investment.
Youth ATV's: most youth ATV air filters are located just under the seat and behind the carburetor. There are two very common types of air filters on these bikes. K&N (style), oil impregnated clutch, and the sealed foam filter.
K&N Style: This is one of the easiest types of filters to clean. This filter can be 'blown' out with a air compressor for quite some time, but you will eventually need to buy filter cleaner and filter oil to do it right. Come by our store and we can set you up with the proper cleaning and oiling system to keep you filter in tip top shape.
Sealed Foam: this filter will be enclosed in a plastic or metal case with a hole in one end and the other going to the carburetor. You will need to remove this foam filter from it's housing. Use mild soap and warm water to clean this filter out. Let it dry and put it back in. You can also use some filter oil like mentioned above or light motor oil on the filter. This will keep it form drying out and it helps catch any water or dirt that may enter the filter housing.
Service Intervals
Service Intervals: Know your machine!
ATV and DIRT BIKE SERVICE INTERVALS:
Note: If you do not fee comfortable with any of these procedures, DO NOT hurt yourself. Bring the machine to us and let us do it for you!!!
Our ATV's are pre-assembled with a break-in oil. This oil is usually very thick and has little to no thermal protection or detergents. this oil is made to break the engine in with ONLY. This is a thick petroleum based oil that creates HIGH oil pressure and is made to seat the rings in the engine properly. We recommend changing this oil after the first 2 hours of use. You need to change this oil when the engine is warm. BE VERY CAREFUL, WHEN CHANGING THIS OIL SO AS NOT TO BURN YOUR HANDS We recommend you use a quality 10w30, 5w20, or 5w30 Non-synthetic oil. Lighter oil in the winter, heavier oil in the summer. A 5w30 is lighter than a 10w40. Oil change intervals are very tough to set in stone on a ATV. If your grandkids ride this in the back yard on every other Sunday it will probably never wear out. but if your two boys ride them every afternoon in the mud, dirt and every place else they can find then it needs to be changed more often. Keep a eye on the oil, when it gets black it is bad in most cases as oil breaks down the viscosity gets less, in layman's's terms it gets thinner. Be safe over sorry, oil is cheap.
SCOOTER SERVICE INTERVALS:
Just as in above, you new unit will come with a break in oil. We strongly recommend you change this oil after 100 miles. Most scooters do not have a oil filter, there will be a small screen in the oil drain plug at the bottom of the engine. Warm oil will come out easier, be careful not to burn yourself. You scooter oil needs to be changed every 800 mile from there on out. Remember this is a general number! You oil is the life blood to your machine, if you are hard on it and run it in extreme environments then it needs to be changed more often. Be safe over sorry!!
